About:

The plugin uses DcRaw an open source utility written by Dave Coffin, this utility is probably one of the best raw file converters available. A list of supported cameras can be found on Dave Coffin's DcRaw page. The windows binaries used, is compiled by Bennis Welt, he has multiple versions of the optimized binaries available for download.

In the current version only a simple DcRaw configuration dialog is available, we're currently working on a more user friendly configuration dialog and preview of thumbnails, embedded in some raw images, is also in the making. We also have plans for preview of the actual converted image so you can experiment with the DcRaw options, but this depends on Paint.net being able to provide us with the filename of the raw file. see the Known issues for more about this. And finally YES! we will be releasing the source code when the features mentioned above is done.

Installing:

  1. Download one of the setups from the bottom of this page, extract the setup executable from the zip file and run it.
  2. The setup will default to "%ProgramFiles%\Paint.Net", if Paint.Net is installed in another place, please enter the correct path of your Paint.Net installation.
  3. Restart Paint.Net

The WSRawPlugin_Full-Setup.zip includes the DcRaw "standard" binary which works on all processors, but you can download binaries optimized for your processor and replace the one that came with WSRawPlugin_Full-Setup.zip.

Usage:

When a raw file is selected in the Paint.Net open file dialog a little configuration screen is shown, additional DcRaw commandline options can be set here. Commandline option help is available by presseng the "?" button in the titlebar of the window.

Configuration:

The plugin has two configuration options that can be changed, the location of the DcRaw executable, and the file type extensions known by this plugin. The configuration options is in the file "%ProgramFiles%\Paint.Net\FileTypes\WS.RawFileImporter.dll.config"

Known Issues:

  • Paint.Net currently has a bug that causes the original raw image to be truncated to 0 bytes (making it useless)  if you use "Save" after importing an image, as a workaround, use "Save as" after the raw file is imported, and save image to a file , after that "Save" can be used without fear. :D
  • Some combinations of commandline switches can result in a "There was an unspecified error while opening the file." eg "-i -v".
  • Performance could be a little better if only Paint.Net gave us a filename of the raw file, because we don't know the filename the source file is "copied" to a temp file before being processed (hopefully this will be changed in a future release of Paint.Net)
